Hyderabad: A total of 2091 persons were caught during the special drunk-driving checks conducted in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda commissionerates on the eve of New Year.
Teams of the City Traffic Police equipped with breath analysers waved down motorists last night and checked them. In all, the police seized 1,235 vehicles including 186 four-wheelers, 52 auto-rickshaws and 997 two-wheelers.
In Hyderabad, the traffic police caught 1,235 persons from 25 checking points last night. The checks were conducted along main thoroughfares in the city including Himayatnagar, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Narayanguda, Malakpet, Santoshnagar, Falaknuma and Bahadurpura among other places.
The owners were allowed to go after the police seized their vehicles. They have been asked to attend counselling at the Traffic Training Institutes in the city and will be later produced before court.
In Cyberabad, 587 persons were caught by the traffic police during checks at Alwal, Balanagar, Gachibowli, Madhapur, Shamshabad and other places. The highest number of drunk drivers, 145, were caught in Madhapur followed by 114 in Kukatpally.
The Rachakonda traffic police caught 269 persons during the checks conducted at LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Malkajgiri, Bhongir, Uppal, Kushaiguda and Chotuppal. The police had set up check points along the main roads and highways and checked for drunk drivers.
All the vehicles were seized and the drivers were asked to appear before court.
Last year, the police in the three commissionerates had caught about 2,499 persons during similar checks on the eve of New Year.
