On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Hyderabad Customs in India destroyed a total of 8,946.263 kilogrammes of drugs and psychotropic substances. The devastation was done as part of the ‘Say no to drugs’ campaign.
The destroyed substances included 2,655.942 kilogrammes of cannabis (ganja), 11 kilogrammes of heroin, 409.39 kilogrammes of alprazolam and related materials, 142.932 kilogrammes of ephedrine hydrochloride and related materials, 74.92 kilogrammes of ketamine hydrochloride, 2.956 kilogrammes of mephedrone, 53.983 kilogrammes of methaqualone, and 5,595.14 kilogrammes of chemicals used for clandestine manufacture of ephedrine.
On previous instances, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Hyderabad Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, and Hyderabad Customs seized these substances. In April and May 2022, 11 kilogrammes of heroin worth roughly Rs. 77.0 crores were seized from foreign nationals at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
Narcotics and psychotropic substances worth Rs. 295 crores were incinerated at the Hyderabad Waste Management Project in Dindigul Village, Medchal-Malkajgiri District, Telangana.Every year on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking attempts to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of drug consumption and illicit drug trafficking.
