The second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project is set to commence in the first week of January 2025, marking a significant leap in the city’s public transportation infrastructure. Hyderabad Metro Rail Managing Director NVS Reddy made this announcement during a media conference held in the city.
Phase-II of the metro expansion will span approximately 76 kilometers across five corridors, aiming to enhance connectivity across Hyderabad and its suburbs. The ambitious project comes with an estimated cost of over ₹24,000 crore and will be executed in a joint venture mode involving central and state governments, as well as private and institutional funding.
Elaborating on the funding structure, Mr. Reddy explained that the Central government will bear 18% of the total cost, while the Telangana government will contribute 30%. A substantial 48% of the resources will be mobilized through debts, leaving only 4% to be funded under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

“The second phase of the metro will have only 1.6 kilometers of underground corridor near the airport, with the rest of the expansion consisting of elevated lines,” he added, highlighting the project’s cost-effective and efficient design.
The Hyderabad Metro Phase-II project is expected to provide seamless integration with the existing Phase-I network, further bolstering the city’s urban mobility. This expansion will address growing commuter demands, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute to sustainable urban development.
The announcement underscores Hyderabad’s commitment to becoming a global city with world-class infrastructure. More details about the construction timeline and operational plans are expected in the coming weeks.
