It seems the idea of a metro rail route in Hyderabad’s old city will soon come true, but how long will it take? These days, people in the Old City are pondering this question.
In Hyderabad, the metro rail project was launched by the former chief minister of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Rajasekhar Reddy. A metro rail line was planned from Afzalgunj to Falaknuma. However, the old city’s people were not able to access metro rail service due to this plan not being implemented.
Currently, the metro rail engineers are undertaking a fresh survey in the old city in order to start launching the service there.
It is expected that the current survey will be completed within a week. The new survey will be conducted to reconsider the route indicated in the old plan.
A budget allocation for metro rail expansion in Old City was announced by the Telangana government during the last Assembly session.

Construction will begin after the survey is completed, according to reports.
In the first phase of the metro rail project, L&T completed three traffic corridors: Red Line from LB. Nagar to Miyapur, Blue Line from Nagole to Raidurg, and the Green Line from Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) up to MGBS of about 69.2 km.
Previously, public representatives opposed the construction, citing more than 1,000 religious and heritage structures along the route, but now Old City citizens are wondering why they were deprived of the benefits of metro rail.
Telangana has allocated 500 crores for the Old City project this year and 1,500 crores for HMR. As of now, it is estimated that taking up this work on the contract will cost up to 2,000 crores.
It remains to be seen whether the government’s financial position can support the project, as last year, too, 1,000 crores was allocated for metro rail construction, but no work was done.
