Hyderabad Metro to Expand Skywalk Network for Safer Pedestrian Access

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Managing Director NVS Reddy has announced plans to expand the city’s skywalk network, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety and connectivity between metro stations and nearby commercial and residential areas. The initiative aligns with the state government’s efforts to strengthen public transport and reduce private vehicle dependency, thereby curbing air pollution.

The decision was discussed during a Comprehensive Mobility Planning meeting led by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed, where officials emphasized the importance of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has already constructed skywalks at major metro stations such as Punjagutta, Hitech City, and Errum Manzil, seamlessly connecting commuters to shopping malls. Similarly, skywalks at JBS and Parade Ground metro stations facilitate pedestrian movement. Raheja Group has also developed a modern skywalk at Rayadurg Metro Station, providing easy access to corporate offices in the area.

HMDA’s circular skywalk at Uppal Metro Station has proven successful, setting a precedent for large-scale skywalk construction across the city. Encouraged by this model, several private developers have shown interest in new projects.

Among the upcoming skywalks, notable projects include:

  • Dr. Ambedkar Balanagar Metro Station to Phoenix/Landmark Mall
  • LB Nagar Metro Station to Vasavi Anandanilayam

Additionally, discussions are underway to construct skywalks at Nagole, Stadium, Durgam Cheruvu, and Kukatpally metro stations. Companies interested in contributing to the metro skywalk projects can contact L&T Metro Rail’s Station Retail Head, K V Nagendra Prasad, at 9900093820.

Highlighting the commitment to commuter safety, NVS Reddy stated that all 57 Phase 1 metro stations are equipped with pedestrian-friendly facilities for safe road crossings. He urged the public to utilize these amenities to ensure secure transit.

With Hyderabad rapidly expanding, the push for enhanced skywalk infrastructure is expected to improve urban mobility, reduce congestion, and encourage more citizens to opt for metro travel.
