Hyderabad: No plans to extend traffic challan discount

Hyderabad Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police AV Ranganath stated that there were no plans to extend the traffic challan discount beyond March 31 despite the massive discount offer to clear pending traffic challans had garnered a positive response.

Issues such as filing charge sheets on traffic violation cases in time apart from charge sheets against top violators (more than 50 violations) were discussed at a meeting here, with officials being asked to ensure that the challan history of violators is mentioned when filing charge sheets in order to secure the conviction.

Officials were also briefed on how to enforce the removal of car stickers, the cleaning of abandoned vehicles on roadways, irregular number plates, and silencers.

The police in the capital region received a big response to their ‘mega discount offer’ with officials from the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda police limits clearing approximately 1.6 million pending traffic challans worth Rs.115 crore in just 20 days.

According to officials, in the Hyderabad Police limits, 63 lakh traffic challans totalling Rs.49.6 crore were cleared, while 38 lakh pending challans totalling Rs.45.8 crore were cleared in the Cyberabad Police limits. In the Rachakonda limits, the biggest commissionerate in terms of land and jurisdiction, 16 lakh pending challans worth Rs.17.6 crores were cleared.

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, vehicles having pending challans can be stopped and booked for traffic rule violations. According to officials, if the pending challans are not cleared by the car owner, a charge sheet may be filed in court, and the court may jail the person.
