In a significant move to protect public safety and the environment, the Hyderabad City Police’s Mangalhat division has intensified its crackdown on the sale of banned Chinese manja, a hazardous, synthetic kite string. Known for its non-biodegradable properties, Chinese manja poses a severe risk to human lives, birds, and animals, especially during kite-flying season.
Launched on November 10, 2024, the drive led by Inspector M. Mahesh and his team has successfully seized 1,094 bobbins of the illegal kite string and registered 18 cases against 22 accused individuals. The operation was conducted under the vigilant supervision of ACP K. Venkata Reddy, Additional DCP Md Ashfaq, and DCP G. Chandra Mohan of the South West Zone, with a focus on shops selling the banned material in the Mangalhat area.
Authorities have issued stern warnings to shopkeepers in the region, urging them to refrain from selling the harmful kite strings. Failure to comply with the law will result in severe legal consequences, including potential fines and imprisonment.

Beyond enforcement, the police have also emphasized public awareness about the risks associated with synthetic kite string. Awareness meetings have been held with residents and shoppers to inform them about the environmental hazards and human injuries caused by the illegal material. The police have highlighted the importance of using safer, biodegradable kite strings and urged residents to take necessary precautions during kite-flying. These precautions include using rooftops with proper compound walls or railings to minimize accidents.
Citizens are further urged to avoid purchasing or using Chinese manja, as violators will face legal action. With this crackdown, the South West Zone Police aim to safeguard both public safety and the environment, ensuring that kite-flying remains a safe and enjoyable activity for all.
The drive represents a dedicated effort to combat illegal kite-string sales while fostering community awareness and responsibility in keeping the environment safe from non-biodegradable waste.
