In a historic move towards inclusivity, the Hyderabad Police have successfully recruited 44 transgender individuals as traffic assistants after organizing physical selection events. This marks a significant step in empowering the transgender community and providing them with an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society.
A total of 58 transgender candidates participated in physical tests, including running, long jump, and shot put, held at the Goshamahal Police Ground. After the rigorous selection process, 44 individuals were chosen, with 29 being female transgenders and the remaining 15 male.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner C. V. Anand, who was present at the event, congratulated the selected individuals and urged them to serve as role models for their community. He emphasized that their successful recruitment would not only enhance the efficiency of traffic management but also bring a positive reputation to the Hyderabad Police and Telangana State Police Department.

This initiative is the first recruitment drive following an order from Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who directed the appointment of transgenders as traffic assistants within the Hyderabad Traffic Police Department. The Chief Minister’s announcement last month also included plans to deploy transgenders for managing traffic and conducting ‘drunk and drive’ checks in the city.
The recruitment process was a collaborative effort between several government departments. Anitha Ramachandran, Commissioner of the Women and Child Welfare Department, Ravi Gupta, Principal Secretary of the Home Department, and C.V. Anand led the meetings and issued the orders for the recruitment. The physical events were organized by a special committee that included officials from the Social Welfare Department, the Home Guard Commandant, and additional DCP CAR.
The eligibility criteria for the recruitment included being an Indian citizen, aged between 18 and 40, having at least an SSC qualification, and possessing a personal identity card issued by the District Magistrate. Candidates also had to be local residents within the Hyderabad Commissionerate limits.
The transgenders selected in this recruitment will serve as volunteers in the first phase of the program, where they will manage traffic at busy intersections across Greater Hyderabad. Their responsibilities will include ensuring smooth traffic flow, preventing signal jumping, and enforcing traffic rules. They will also participate in ‘drunk and drive’ checks. Their services are expected to be similar to those of Home Guards, with special training provided for traffic management.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has also recommended a special dress code for these recruits, and their salaries will be aligned with those of the Home Guards. They will undergo a week to ten days of training to prepare for their roles in traffic management.
The recruitment initiative has been hailed as a step towards social inclusion, providing the transgender community not only with a source of income but also with greater respect and recognition in society. The appointment of transgenders as traffic assistants is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country.
