Hyderabad police to soon set up Anti-Drug Committees in schools

Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (HNEW), the city Police’s anti-narcotics unit, plans to form Anti-Drug Committees (ADCs) in each educational institution soon.

ADCs will monitor and curb drug consumption and peddling on the institution’s premises and hostels. It will be the responsibility of the HNEW team and local police to keep in touch with the ADCs on a regular basis.

Moreover, the ADCs will raise awareness about the ill effects of drug abuse, said City Police Commissioner CV Anand.

By visiting educational institutions, bus stops, metro rail stations, and train stations, the City Police will create a public awareness campaign about drug abuse.

“After cracking a few hefty drug-related cases, our cooperation with units like NCB, DRI, Customs, IB, and ED increased greatly. Our coordination will be strengthened in the future in order to monitor narcotics smuggling and peddling gangs and control the inflow and spread into the country,” the Commissioner said.

Several major narcotics smugglers have been arrested since the HNEW team was formed in early 2022. So far, HNEW teams have seized 124 kg of ganja, 5.4 kg of hashish oil, 116 LSD blots, 25 grams MDMA, 10 Ecstasy pills, and 75 grams of heroin. A total of 124 paddlers, 96 consumers, and four transporters have been arrested, and the PD Act has been invoked against 12 individuals.

Several high-end pubs and star hotels have been raided by Hyderabad Commissioner’s Task Force teams, according to Anand. The City Police also entered into a memorandum of understanding with private and government institutions to help drug addicts get out of their addiction.

The City Police have formed a rehabilitation monitoring team. The City Police will work with the Institute of Mental Health, Erragadda, Asha Group of Hospitals, Phoenix Rehab Services, and Amrita Foundation Society, he said.
