Hyderabad: Protected monuments to have free entry from August 5 to 15

In celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and the 75th Independence Day, the government has granted free entry to Charminar, Golconda Fort, and all other monuments and sites protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

From August 5 to 15, foreigners and Indians alike will be able to take advantage of the free entry.

Confirming the same, union minister G Kishan Reddy wrote on Twitter: As part of ‘Azadi ka #AmritMahotsav’ and 75th I-Day celebrations, @ASIGoI has made Entry Free for visitors/tourists to all its protected monuments/sites across the country, from 5th -15th August 2022.

Telangana has four ASI monuments in Hyderabad and Warangal. The capital city of the state is home to three of them.

These sites include

  1. Archaeological Site Museum, Kondapur (Hyderabad)
  2. Golconda Fort (Hyderabad)
  3. Charminar (Hyderabad)
  4. Warangal Fort (Warangal).

Charminar

Hyderabad is home to this famous monument. In 1591, the fifth king of the Qutub Shahi dynasty moved the capital from Golconda to Hyderabad. It was named “Charminar” due to its four minarets.

Currently, the ASI is responsible for maintaining the historical monument.

With the formation of Telangana State in 2014, the monument was incorporated into the state’s official emblem along with Kakatiya Kala Thoranam.

Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort is also a popular tourist destination, in addition to Charminar. The Qutb Shahi dynasty built it. It is located in a region that is famous for producing diamonds such as Koh-i-Noor.

It is widely believed that the following diamonds were excavated from the Golconda mines.

  1. Noor-ul-Ain
  2. Koh-i-Noor
  3. Daria-i-Noor
  4. Hope Diamond
  5. Regent Diamond
  6. Princie Diamond
  7. Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond

As of 2014, the complex was on the tentative list of UNESCO to become a World Heritage Site.
