Hyderabad: Public Faces Issues as New Ration Card Site Crashes

The introduction of an online application system for new ration cards and the addition of family members to existing cards in Hyderabad has been marred by significant technical issues, causing widespread frustration among the public. The Telangana Department of Civil Supplies launched this new system through MeeSeva with the aim of streamlining the application process, but technical glitches and a lack of proper information have left thousands of applicants struggling.

The Telangana government, in collaboration with MeeSeva, introduced an online application system for issuing new ration cards and adding family members to existing cards. The move was intended to make the application process easier and more accessible for the public. To ensure the smooth functioning of the system, Civil Supplies Commissioner D.S. Chauhan issued a circular directing the Electronic Service Delivery (ESD) and MeeSeva teams to facilitate the process. Additionally, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been tasked with activating the ration card database web service to enhance the entire system.

A key objective of the online system is to prevent fraudulent applications and ensure that only eligible families receive ration cards. The government has set a target to issue ration cards to deserving households while minimizing the risk of fake submissions. This decision was made after the approval of new standards and procedures by the state cabinet’s sub-committee on January 4.

Despite the intention to simplify the process, the new system has faced immediate challenges. Several applicants have reported that the portal crashed as soon as it was launched, leaving thousands of citizens, who had been waiting for ration cards for years, once again disappointed.

Citizens arriving at MeeSeva centers have expressed their discontent, claiming that they were assured of an easy process, only to find that the portal was not functioning. One applicant said, “We are being disappointed once again, and it feels like this whole process is just another scam.”

The situation worsened as the government failed to provide clear instructions on how to proceed. Authorities have stated that the portal will be fully functional in the next 10 to 15 days, but citizens remain skeptical due to past delays and administrative inefficiencies. There is a lack of confidence among the public, given the history of similar initiatives that faced significant hurdles.

Under the previous BRS government, the online system for ration cards was completely shut down, despite claims that the application process was ongoing. The current Congress-led government has reinstated the online system, but the public continues to face numerous difficulties. Prior to this, applications were being processed through the Praja Palana Seva Kendras, but those centers were also ineffective and became a target of public criticism.

The Department of Civil Supplies has announced an emergency meeting to address the technical issues plaguing the system. Officials have urged the public not to create unnecessary crowds at MeeSeva centers and to wait until the system is fully operational. They have asked citizens to be patient as they work on resolving the issues.

While the introduction of the online ration card system was a positive step towards modernization and streamlining the process, the technical failures and lack of communication from the government have resulted in public frustration. The government must take immediate action to resolve the issues and restore public confidence in the system. With continued delays and a lack of clarity, the promise of a simpler and more efficient application process remains unfulfilled for many citizens.
