Hyderabad Records No Bad Air Days in 2023

In a notable achievement for urban air quality management, Hyderabad recorded no bad air days in 2023, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha. The analysis conducted by the Pollution Control Board revealed that the city experienced predominantly satisfactory air quality throughout the year.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) for Hyderabad in 2023 showed:

  • 5 days of good air quality (AQI 0-50)

  • 283 days of satisfactory air quality (AQI 51-100)

  • 77 days of moderate air quality (AQI 101-200)

Hyderabad was among 40 cities in 14 states that did not record any bad air days in 2023. This list also included Bengaluru, which reported 69 good days, 259 satisfactory days, and 37 moderate days. Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh also had a clean record with 105 good days, 174 satisfactory days, and 30 moderate days out of 309 days analyzed.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, noted that cities and states are not ranked based on air pollution levels. However, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has identified Non-Attainment Cities (NAC) based on ambient air quality data exceeding National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for any one of the notified parameters consecutively for five years.

Despite the overall positive outlook for Hyderabad, the report highlighted that there are still cities with high percentages of bad air days. Greater Noida was mentioned as one of the ten cities in five states with the highest percentage of bad days during 2023.

This achievement for Hyderabad underscores the city’s effective air quality management and pollution control measures. As urban centers across India continue to grapple with air pollution, the example set by Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Anantapur offers valuable insights into successful strategies for maintaining and improving air quality.

The Pollution Control Board’s report serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained efforts in monitoring and managing air quality to ensure the health and well-being of urban populations.
