A fast-track court in Hyderabad sentenced a private school driver to 20 years in prison on Tuesday for sexually assaulting a four-year-old student.
Beemana Rajani Kumar (34) was found guilty and sentenced by the court. It did, however, exonerate school principal S. Madhavi.
Kumar, who was serving as the principal’s chauffeur at the time, was detained for sexually assaulting the LKG pupil on October 19, last year.
The principal of Banjara Hills’ DAV Public School was also arrested for carelessness.
The incident was brought to light after the victim’s parents noted behavioural changes in her. When questioned, she revealed that Rajani Kumar had been sexually assaulting her for the last three months. He would transport her from classroom to digital classroom. The accused led her to an interior room of the school, stripped her naked, and sexually abused her.
When the victim’s parents and other relatives learned about the incident, they hurried to the school and beat up the driver. He was later apprehended by police.
Kumar was charged with violating sections 376 a and b of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 6 read with 5 m of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.+
Following a protest by the victim’s family and others, the police arrested the principal for carelessness. The Telangana government decertified the private school following the event.
Because the incident sparked concern, the government formed a committee to recommend steps to safeguard the safety and security of pupils in schools.
