Apple prices in the city have dropped as a result of massive arrivals from Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh this season.
A good quality apple costs Rs 15 on average, and a dozen of the fruit costs Rs 180, while a super quality apple costs Rs 18 on average. The regular quality costs around Rs 10 per piece.
Arrivals are higher this year compared to previous years, according to Ch. Narsimha Reddy, secretary of Batasingaram Market. Every day, approximately 20 to 25 trucks carrying apple loads arrive, resulting in good availability of apples and, as a result, a price decrease.
“Since last week, the Kashmir variety apple arrivals started and the prices dropped significantly. The trend will continue until the next few days,” said Reddy.
A truck transports between 600 and 1,000 boxes of apples to the city from the Himachal Pradesh districts of Shimla, Kahaul-Spiti, Mandi, Kinnaur, Chamba, and Kullu. Aside from that, the Kashmir variety is grown in all districts of the valley and is sourced by local wholesalers.

“This year the price is lesser by Rs 200 and Rs 400 per box. Since the arrivals are more, the price is less and the benefit automatically is passed on to the buyers. People will continue to get the advantage of the good supplies till the first week of December,” said Mohd Tajuddin, a commission agent at MJ Market.
Kulu Delicious, Kinor, Jonthon, Maharaji, BalgariaTrel, Dodhi Ambri, Chari Ambri, Walayati Amberi, and Mah Ambri are among the varieties grown in the valley. Royal Delicious, Dark Baron Gala, Scarlet Spur, Red Velox, and Golden Delicious are the most widely grown and high-quality apple varieties in Himachal Pradesh.
After sorting the fruit from the boxes, the pricing is completed. “The bigger variety is priced higher while the other ones are sold for a lesser price. However, the overall price of the fruit is less,” said Moinuddin, a fruit vendor at Afzalgunj.
