Supporters of Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh raised slogans in front of Home Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali on Friday at the TNGO Function Hall at Mangalhat demanding the suspended MLA’s release.
During the afternoon of Friday, the home minister attended in a program at the function hall in Hyderabad. Local BJP workers and Raja Singh supporters who were present in the function hall raised slogans in support of the suspended MLA as soon as Mahmood Ali arrived.
Supporters of Raja Singh denounced the invocation of the PD Act against the MLA and his detention at the Central Prison Cherlapally. There were also slogans raised by his supporters against the Telangana government, K Chandrashekhar Rao, and other TRS leaders.
In the function hall, TRS party workers also raised counter slogans, making the situation tense. After failing to pacify the protestors, the police immediately intervened and drove them out of the function hall.
In anticipation of more protests outside the function hall by Raja Singh supporters, additional police forces were rushed to the venue. The situation was reviewed by senior police officials.
The suspension of Raja Singh from the BJP has not gone over well with several young BJP supporters who see his communal grandstanding and mongering of hate as a true reflection of the party’s values.
A video uploaded by Raja Singh on his YouTube channel in which he made objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammed sparked communal tensions in parts of Hyderabad over the past few weeks.
YouTube later took down the video. Protests finally subsided after he was arrested by the city police on August 23, released on bail by a local court on the same day, and then arrested again two days later and sent to the Cherlapally jail on August 25.
