Hyderabad: TSCBOA to set up helpline following attack on cab driver

Telangana State Cabs & Bus Operators Association (TSCBOA) on Wednesday demanded stern action against those responsible for attacks on cab and auto-rickshaw drivers.

The demand follows an attack on a Muslim cab driver who was attacked after he refused to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ when miscreants stopped him.

There has been an increase in attacks on cab drivers in Hyderabad and its suburbs. Despite some grievous incidents where victims file police reports, many incidents go unnoticed. Some unruly passengers are beating or threatening cab drivers over minor disputes, such as payment mode or lack of change, said TSCBOA President Syed Nizamuddin.

According to the TSCBOA president, some unruly passengers have assaulted Ola and Uber drivers sporadic times. Neither the drivers nor their management follows up properly, so the attackers escape punishment, he said.

In Alkapuri Colony under the Narsingi Police Station limits, a Muslim cab driver was attacked two days ago. The driver was not only attacked by a gang but also robbed of cash, according to Nizamuddin. A similar attack took place in Rajendranagar police limits in the second week of August, Nizamuddin said.

In order to deal with cases of attacks against cab and auto drivers, Syed Nizamuddin says the TSCBOA plans to start a 24×7 helpline. At the TSCBOA’s general body meeting scheduled for the third week of September, the modalities of the proposed Helpline will be finalized.

Six arrested in connection with the attack

On Monday, the city police arrested six people for allegedly assaulting a cab driver in Alkapur, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Cyberabad police station Narsingi.

In the early hours of Sunday, the cab driver, Syed Lateefuddin, was pursued by a group of six people on motorcycles while on his way to pick up a passenger. He claimed that they forced him to pull over and then commanded him to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram.’ When he refused, they threw boulders at his car.

Fortunately, Lateefuddin, a resident of the old city’s Chandrayangutta, escaped and dialed 100 around 4 a.m. An hour later, police officers arrived on the scene.

Later, the victim and Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Amjedullah Khan Khalid went to the police station and filed a complaint.
