Hyderabad’s New Kondapur-Gachibowli Flyover Draws Road Safety Concerns Ahead of Inauguration

Hyderabad’s much-awaited Kondapur-Gachibowli flyover, scheduled for inauguration on June 28, is already under scrutiny for its road safety shortcomings, even before the first vehicle rolls over it.

The 1.29-km long third-level flyover, named after late Congress leader P. Janardhan Reddy (PJR), promises to significantly reduce traffic congestion between Kondapur and Gachibowli. It is being touted as another milestone under the GHMC’s Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), adding to the city’s expanding flyover network.

However, what should have been a moment of civic pride has now turned controversial. Residents, commuters, and infrastructure experts have raised concerns about the newly installed rumble strips, especially those placed on sharp curves of the flyover. Locals allege that the strips are unscientifically positioned and unusually thick, making driving risky.

In particular, experts have pointed out that these rumble strips trap rainwater, increasing the likelihood of skidding accidents, especially during monsoon showers.

Speaking to media, Dr. S.P. Anchuri, infrastructure consultant and chairman of FOCUS (Forum for Construction Utility Services), cautioned that the water accumulation caused by these poorly designed strips poses a significant safety threat. He called for immediate corrective measures before the flyover opens to the public.

This controversy comes despite the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)’s earlier commitment in 2022 to remove unscientific speed breakers and rumble strips across the city after facing criticism for similar issues on other roads.

Local residents argue that ignoring these safety guidelines on a brand-new project raises serious questions about quality checks, design approvals, and road safety planning by the civic body.

The Kondapur-Gachibowli flyover, part of the city’s ongoing infrastructure upgrades, is Hyderabad’s first third-level flyover, arching over two existing flyovers. GHMC officials say that once operational, it will help reduce travel time and ease congestion for thousands of daily commuters traveling between HiTec City, Kondapur, and Gachibowli.

However, with mounting public concern, many now demand that GHMC urgently review the flyover’s safety design before its official inauguration on June 28.
