As summer approaches, the hot climate and geography of Hyderabad place residents at greater risk of dehydration, according to experts. Rising temperatures create ideal conditions for the spread of infectious diseases, which further exacerbates dehydration risks.Dehydration is often not recognized until it reaches critical levels.
While intense thirst is a common symptom, dehydration can sometimes develop unnoticed, especially in the form of “silent dehydration,” which lacks obvious warning signs. Another serious concern is diarrheal dehydration, which can be life-threatening, particularly for young children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Hyderabad’s semi-arid climate, along with occasional water shortages, contributes to increased dehydration risks. Experts emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and being aware of proper hydration techniques. Dr. B. Ravinder Reddy, a senior consultant at Care Hospital, warns that silent dehydration—especially in diabetics—can occur without noticeable symptoms and may lead to cognitive decline and kidney issues. He also recommends electrolyte-based hydration as more effective than drinking plain water.

Diarrheal dehydration is particularly dangerous for children and can result in severe complications if not addressed promptly. Dr. C. Suresh Kumar, Professor of Pediatrics at RVM Medical College, emphasizes the importance of early intervention with WHO-recommended Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to replenish lost fluids and prevent fatal outcomes. He also cautioned that incorrect ORS preparation can reduce its effectiveness, advising that ready-to-drink ORS is a safer alternative.
