In a significant move to protect the city’s lakes from increasing pollution, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has joined forces with the Pollution Control Board (PCB) to launch an ambitious initiative aimed at preserving and rejuvenating the water bodies. The collaboration is part of a broader effort to transform the city’s lakes into eco-friendly habitats, aligning with the government’s environmental sustainability goals, officials announced on Monday.
The partnership was formalized during a meeting held between PCB Member Secretary G. Ravi and HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath, along with senior officials from both organizations. The discussions centered around the urgent need to safeguard Hyderabad’s lakes from the dangers posed by pollution, particularly industrial waste and unchecked encroachments.
Commissioner Ranganath outlined HYDRAA’s key objectives, emphasizing the agency’s role in not only protecting lakes but also ensuring the security of government lands from illegal encroachments. “HYDRAA is committed to ensuring the integrity of stormwater channels and other public utility spaces, which are critical to the city’s overall water management system,” Ranganath said.

Member Secretary Ravi, representing the Pollution Control Board, highlighted the agency’s operational focus on controlling pollution and regulating industrial waste disposal. “Our primary concern is preventing harmful pollutants from entering the lakes and stormwater drains. These water bodies are integral to the city’s ecosystem, and we cannot afford to let industrial waste or illegal dumping compromise their health,” Ravi stated.
One of the central strategies discussed at the meeting was the deployment of specialized teams for constant surveillance around the lakes and stormwater drains. Both organizations have committed to working together to monitor and prevent the illegal dumping of industrial waste. Additionally, plans were outlined to install state-of-the-art monitoring systems that will track chemical pollutants and trace them back to their source, allowing authorities to hold offending companies accountable.
In line with this initiative, the two organizations have agreed to collaborate on setting up a comprehensive surveillance infrastructure across Hyderabad’s most vulnerable lakes and water bodies. The new monitoring systems will use advanced technology to detect and identify pollutants in real time, providing authorities with the tools they need to prevent environmental damage and hold violators accountable.
This partnership comes as part of a larger, ongoing effort by the Telangana government to address the environmental challenges posed by industrial waste, unregulated construction, and encroachments on water bodies. Hyderabad’s lakes have been under threat for years, with many facing degradation due to pollution from domestic and industrial sources. The government has recognized the urgent need for integrated solutions to preserve these water bodies, which are crucial to the city’s biodiversity, water supply, and overall ecological health.
Officials from both HYDRAA and PCB expressed optimism that this new collaboration will pave the way for a cleaner, healthier future for Hyderabad’s lakes. “Our goal is not only to protect these water bodies but also to enhance their environmental value, turning them into sustainable, eco-friendly spaces for future generations,” Commissioner Ranganath said.
As the partnership moves forward, it is expected to have a far-reaching impact on improving the water quality in Hyderabad’s lakes and setting a new standard for environmental protection in the region. The initiative is seen as a critical step toward achieving the city’s long-term environmental sustainability goals and reinforcing Hyderabad’s commitment to becoming a model of urban environmental stewardship.
