HYDRAA Delegation Visits Bengaluru to Study Lake Restoration Techniques for Application in Hyderabad

In a bid to bolster environmental preservation and sustainable water management in Hyderabad, a team from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Management Authority (HYDRAA), led by Commissioner AV Ranganath, visited the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre in Bengaluru. The delegation conducted an on-ground assessment of the restoration efforts at Yelahanka and Jakkur lakes, gaining insights into rejuvenation techniques that could inform future projects in Hyderabad.

The HYDRAA delegation’s visit centered on examining the lake restoration methods used by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), with a focus on wastewater treatment, sustainable lake preservation, and community involvement. Key topics included strategies for sewage diversion and lake recharge, utilizing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to ensure clean water inflows. HYDRAA officials met with BBMP representatives and consulted Vimos Technocrats Pvt Ltd, the company responsible for the restoration work, to discuss technical challenges and solutions.

A notable aspect of the visit was the delegation’s review of the transformation of Yelahanka Lake, covering 300 acres, and Jakkur Lake, spanning 164 acres. Both lakes have been systematically developed into freshwater reservoirs, thanks to initiatives aimed at reducing contamination and enhancing beautification. Local residents play an active role in the maintenance and upkeep of these water bodies, demonstrating the power of community engagement in environmental projects.

HYDRAA officials also examined innovative methods to prevent sewage inflow into the lakes. Key solutions observed included the construction of upstream ponds designed to filter out silt before water flows into the lakes, enhancing water quality and supporting the lakes’ role as freshwater sources.

“This visit has provided valuable insights into sustainable lake management practices. We look forward to applying these lessons to similar restoration projects in Hyderabad to meet our city’s environmental and water management goals,” said Commissioner Ranganath.

The knowledge gathered on this visit marks an important step toward preserving Hyderabad’s natural resources, with plans underway to integrate the best practices observed in Bengaluru into Hyderabad’s own lake and water body rejuvenation initiatives.
