Illegal Bridge Built in Bihar’s Purnea to Boost Property Prices, Demolition Ordered

Authorities in Bihar’s Purnea district have ordered the demolition of an illegally constructed bridge over the Kari Koshi River, allegedly built by real estate brokers to increase the value of nearby land. The unauthorized construction has raised serious concerns about illegal infrastructure developments in the region.

According to Purnea Municipal Commissioner Kumar Mangalam, the bridge, measuring 60 feet by 10 feet, was built in Ward Number 4 of the Rahmat Nagar area without the consent of the civic body. Speaking to the media, Mangalam stated, “The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Purnea Municipal Corporation (PMC). This construction was carried out by private individuals without approval. We have also sought clarification from the Water Resources Department.”

Authorities discovered the unauthorized bridge when PMC officials conducted a site visit on Thursday. However, their efforts to take immediate action were met with resistance. “People with vested interests provoked locals, leading to objections and preventing officials from proceeding with further action,” Mangalam said. He emphasized that legal action would be taken in accordance with existing laws.

The municipal commissioner did not rule out the involvement of land mafias and real estate brokers. However, locals have refrained from disclosing the identities of those responsible for the illegal construction.

This incident is not an isolated case in Bihar. In an earlier instance, a bridge was built without approach roads over the Burhi Gandak River in Muzaffarpur district, drawing widespread attention when its photographs went viral on social media. The case highlighted the growing problem of unauthorized infrastructure projects in the state.

Authorities continue to investigate the matter and have assured the public that strict measures will be taken to prevent illegal constructions that disrupt civic planning. The demolition of the bridge is expected to be carried out soon, ensuring that unauthorized structures do not interfere with proper urban development.
