IMD Forecasts Above-Normal July Rainfall Across India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal rainfall for July across most of India, excluding parts of the northeastern region. In a virtual press conference, IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that rainfall for July is expected to exceed 106% of the long-period average of 28.04 cm.

According to Mohapatra, normal to above-normal rainfall is likely over many parts of the country, except for several areas in northeast India, as well as portions of northwest, east, and southeast peninsular India. He also noted that maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to below normal over much of northwest India and southern peninsular India, except the west coast.

Conversely, above-normal maximum temperatures are anticipated over central India, eastern and northeastern India, and along the west coast. Minimum temperatures, Mohapatra added, are likely to be above normal over many regions of India, with exceptions in parts of northwest India, adjoining areas of central India, and some pockets of southeastern peninsular India.

Mohapatra emphasized the expectation of favorable monsoon conditions in July, attributing potentially higher minimum temperatures to cloudy weather patterns. The IMD highlighted that northwest India experienced its warmest June on record since 1901, with an average temperature of 31.73 degrees Celsius.
