IMD Predicts Above-Normal Rainfall for July; Flood Alert for Central India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast above-normal rainfall across most parts of the country for July, raising concerns over potential flooding, especially in central India, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, addressing an online briefing, said that while central India and parts of the southern peninsula are expected to receive heavy rainfall, regions like the northeast, eastern India, and extreme southern parts of the peninsula may witness below-normal rains.

“There is a high probability of intense rainfall activity in areas including east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Vidarbha, Telangana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra,” Mohapatra said. The IMD advised close monitoring of the catchment areas of major rivers such as the Godavari, Mahanadi, and Krishna.

In July, India typically records an average of 28 cm rainfall. This year, central India, especially the upper Mahanadi basin covering Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, is likely to receive significantly higher rainfall.

On temperature trends, the IMD expects maximum temperatures to remain normal to below-normal in many regions, though parts of the northeast, northwest, east, and southern peninsula may experience above-normal temperatures. Authorities in vulnerable states have been urged to stay on alert for flood preparedness.
