India Breaks World Record: 64.2 Crore Voters Participate in Lok Sabha Elections

India has achieved a historic milestone with 64.2 crore voters, including 31.2 crore women, participating in the Lok Sabha elections this year, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Monday.

In a press briefing, Kumar highlighted the scale and scope of the world’s largest electoral exercise. He noted the involvement of over 68,000 monitoring teams and 1.5 crore polling and security personnel to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. “India set a world record with 64.2 crore voters, including 31.2 crore women, participating in the Lok Sabha elections this year,” Kumar stated.

Addressing humorous social media references to election commissioners being ‘Laapataa Gentlemen’ (missing gentlemen), Kumar remarked, “We were always here, never went missing. Now memes can say the ‘Laapataa Gentlemen’ are back.”

Kumar detailed the extensive logistics involved in the elections, which included the use of nearly four lakh vehicles, 135 special trains, and 1,692 air sorties. “Only 39 repolls occurred in the 2024 general elections compared to 540 repolls in 2019,” Kumar noted, underscoring the improved efficiency and reduced need for repeat voting.

In addition, Kumar highlighted a significant achievement in Jammu and Kashmir, which recorded its highest voter turnout in four decades, with an overall turnout of 58.58 percent and 51.05 percent in the Valley.

The 2024 elections also saw a dramatic increase in the seizure of illegal items. “Seizures totaling Rs 10,000 crore, including cash, freebies, drugs, and liquor, were made during the 2024 polls, compared to Rs 3,500 crore in 2019,” Kumar said, reflecting heightened vigilance and enforcement efforts during this election cycle.

This landmark electoral event showcases India’s robust democratic framework and the significant advancements in electoral management and voter participation.
