Insufficient Physical Activity Among Indian Adults, A Growing Public Health Concern

A recent study published in The Lancet Global Health highlights concerning trends in physical activity among adults, particularly in South Asia. In India, nearly 50% of adults are not meeting recommended physical activity levels, with a significant disparity between genders. Shockingly, 57% of women fall short compared to 42% of men, underscoring a 14% gap in activity levels.

Globally, the situation is equally alarming, with one-third of adults failing to achieve the minimum weekly physical activity guidelines. This trend has worsened over the past decade, increasing by 5% since 2010. If current trajectories continue, global targets for improving physical activity by 15% are at risk of not being met.

In India specifically, the percentage of adults engaging in insufficient physical activity has risen from just over 22% in 2000 to nearly 50% in 2022. Projections suggest this could reach 60% by 2030 if trends persist. This rise is mirrored in other regions, highlighting a global health concern.

Furthermore, older adults, aged 60 and above, are increasingly inactive worldwide, compounding the risk of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The World Health Organization warns that sedentary lifestyles contribute significantly to these health challenges, placing strain on healthcare systems worldwide.

Efforts to reverse these trends are critical, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to promote physical activity across all demographics. Addressing gender disparities and promoting active lifestyles are essential steps towards improving public health outcomes both in India and globally.
