The forty six years old body’s focus is to enhance the quality of Interior Design Profession in India.

We are holding a Summit later this year in September in Jaipur. There we will announce the Charter defining quality interior design education. Hyderabad based designer Yashwanth Ramanamurthy already prepared a draft charter. After the summit, we will reveal details of the same which will be submitted to the competent government authorities, Pratap Jadhav added.

In our efforts improve quality education, we are collaborating with 35 colleges and 12 universities, across India, including Hyderabadbased Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University. Our role here is to enhance the quality of interior design education, faculty training, he informed. The country has three lakh Interior Designers. Every year 10,000 students are entering into the profession, he stated.

There are three lakh interior design professionals in India. There is a dearth of skilled professionals. There is a demand for three lakh interior design professionals in the country, Jadhav revealed.

We are seriously contemplating to restrict practice to well qualified and well deserving interior designers by bringing in Licensing system into the profession. It may take a decade or more to bring in a law and the same to come into force. Licensing has to be made mandatory because they play a very critical role in the development of a structure. They as professionals deal with spaces which have health and safety issues. Many developed nations allow individuals who have significant experience and education in design . The licensing system is already in place in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Indonesia, Pratap told. (NSS)
