Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced the commencement of PhD admissions for the academic year 2025-26, even as the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has launched an indefinite hunger strike in protest.
The agitation began Thursday night, with students objecting to the university’s decision to exclude candidates who appeared for the June 2025 UGC-NET exam from PhD admissions. The students are also demanding the reinstatement of the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) as the mode of PhD admission.
According to the official schedule, online applications for PhD programmes will be accepted from June 26 to July 7, 2025. A correction window will be available from July 8 to 9, and the viva-voce invitations are expected to be issued by July 18. The viva-voce interviews will be conducted from July 25 to 31.

The first merit list will be released on August 11, followed by pre-enrolment registration and fee payment from August 11 to 13, and physical document verification from August 18 to 21.
A second merit list is scheduled for August 29, with fee payment and registration from August 29 to 31, and document verification on September 4 and 5.
If needed, a third and final merit list will be announced on September 15, with fee payment until September 17, and final verification on September 22 and 23. The last date for admission across all rounds is September 30.
Meanwhile, JNUSU has called the admission process exclusionary and undemocratic, stating that many recent postgraduates who appeared for the UGC-NET June 2025 exam are now ineligible for admission. The students argue that this policy will severely affect a large section of MA pass-outs from the university.
The university administration is yet to respond officially to the hunger strike. Student protests are expected to continue in the coming days.
