Actress Karla Sofía Gascón, known for her role in Emilia Pérez, is under intense scrutiny following a series of controversial social media posts she made between 2020 and 2021. The posts, which have resurfaced on X (formerly Twitter), have sparked widespread criticism for their offensive and inflammatory content regarding Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars.
Many of the posts, which were deleted after they were uncovered by journalist Sarah Hagi, contain derogatory and inflammatory remarks. One post from November 2020, in which Gascón questions the increasing Muslim population in Spain, reads: “Is it just my impression or are there more Muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school, there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year, instead of English, we’ll have to teach Arabic.”
Another post from September 2020, attached to a photo of a Muslim family, including a woman in a burka, states: “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible… How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”

Further posts from Gascón’s account show similarly controversial opinions, including one from January 2021 in which she states that “Islam fails to comply with international rights” and suggests that religions like Islam should be banned unless they align with human rights laws.
Gascón also posted a thread regarding George Floyd in the days following his death at the hands of a police officer in 2020, which triggered global protests. In the thread, she referred to Floyd as a “drug addict swindler” and suggested that his death was used to demonstrate that some people consider Black people “monkeys without rights.” Gascón added that the issue was not necessarily racism, but rather a division between social classes feeling threatened by each other.
In addition to these posts, Gascón’s comments about diversity at the Oscars and other posts that criticized various religions have raised concerns about her views on inclusivity and human rights.
Following the resurfacing of these posts, many social media users and activists have called for accountability, with many expressing disappointment in Gascón’s comments. The backlash has intensified online, with some questioning her professional future in the entertainment industry. At this time, Gascón has not publicly addressed the controversy.
