Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K. Kavitha has strongly criticised the Congress-led Telangana government for its move to cancel over 7.24 lakh ration cards, calling it a “deliberate attempt” to deprive deserving families of essential food security under the guise of non-utilisation.
In a post on social media platform X on Saturday, Kavitha highlighted that the government had distributed a three-month stock of ration in June to pre-empt disruptions during the monsoon season. Due to unavoidable circumstances, many families were unable to collect their allotted ration during that window. “Using this as an excuse to cancel cards is unacceptable,” she said, urging the government to reissue ration cards to all pending applicants immediately.
She also questioned the contradiction between the government’s earlier public commitment to issue ration cards to all eligible families—“even if it meant giving out 30 to 40 lakh new cards”—and its current move to cancel existing ones.
Kavitha demanded that the state ensure rice is redistributed to those who missed their earlier quota and warned against arbitrary cancellations that could hurt poor and marginalised households.
Her remarks come amid growing criticism from opposition leaders and social activists about the Congress government’s ration card drive, which many allege is being used selectively and unfairly. The ration card issue has now emerged as a political flashpoint, with BRS accusing the government of betraying its pre-election welfare promises.
