KCR Returns to Telangana Bhavan After Seven Months, BRS Charts Comeback Strategy

After a seven-month absence, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) returned to Telangana Bhavan on February 19 to preside over the party’s extended executive meeting. With the party still reeling from its electoral defeats, the meeting was seen as a crucial step in BRS’s bid to regain lost ground ahead of the upcoming local body elections.

Nearly 16 months after losing power to Congress in the Telangana Assembly elections and drawing a blank in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BRS has decided to take an aggressive stance against the ruling party. The meeting extensively discussed Congress’s “failures” in implementing its election promises and chalked out a roadmap for the party’s revival.

KCR, who remains the party’s key strategist, is expected to guide party leaders in strengthening the organisation and mobilising support through public campaigns and protests.

The executive meeting was attended by senior BRS leaders, including district presidents, sitting and former MPs, MLAs, MLCs, former chairpersons of corporations, Zilla Parishads, and constituency in-charges.

In a major announcement during the meeting, KCR declared that 53 Assembly seats would be reserved for women in the 2028 elections. With delimitation increasing the number of seats to 160, the party also plans to appoint a woman as its new president.

Addressing the gathering, KCR criticised the Congress government, stating that while it won the elections on the basis of welfare schemes, it has now “completely failed” to deliver on its promises.

To strengthen its opposition role, BRS has planned a series of year-long protests, with one agitation per month, targeting various policy failures of the Congress government. Additionally, the party will form three committees per district, focusing on key voter groups such as farmers, workers, women, and students.

As part of its comeback strategy, BRS will organise a massive public meeting to mark its 24th anniversary and the beginning of its silver jubilee year. The event will serve as a platform to highlight Congress’s shortcomings and re-energise party workers and supporters.

KCR, who celebrated his 71st birthday on February 17, is set to lead the party’s silver jubilee programmes and revamp its political strategy for the coming years.

BRS has faced significant challenges since its defeat in November 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, where it managed to win only 39 seats out of 119. The party’s fortunes further declined in the Lok Sabha elections, where it failed to win a single seat for the first time in its history.

Adding to its troubles, at least a dozen BRS MLAs have defected to Congress, and several senior leaders have switched sides since the party’s electoral setback.

Despite these challenges, KCR and his party are determined to rebuild their political base, with the 2028 elections and local body polls in focus. With a renewed aggressive campaign, strategic public outreach, and internal restructuring, BRS hopes to reclaim its lost influence in Telangana politics.
