Kohli’s Test Retirement Was Mishandled: Ravi Shastri

Former Indian cricket coach Ravi Shastri believes that Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement from Test cricket could have been handled in a more respectful and communicative manner. Shastri expressed regret that Kohli, one of India’s greatest Test players, didn’t receive a proper farewell.

Kohli announced his retirement from the longest format of the game last month, bringing an end to a glorious Test career that included 123 matches, 9,230 runs, and 30 centuries, with a solid batting average of 46.85.

“When you go, that’s when people realize how big a player you were. I feel sad that he is gone, the way he is gone. It could have been handled better. There should have been more communication,” Shastri said in a video posted by SonyLiv on social media.

Shastri also revealed that, had he been in charge, he would have reinstated Kohli as India’s Test captain after the recent series in Australia.

Kohli stepped down as Test captain in early 2022 following a successful tenure, including a historic Test series win in Australia in 2018-19 and a rise to the No.1 ICC Test ranking for India.

Kohli’s retirement has left a major void in the Indian batting lineup and sparked conversations about leadership, communication, and transition in Indian cricket.
