KRMB meeting: Telangana to remain persistent on 50 percent water share

The state’s irrigation authorities are determined to press for their fair share of water at the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) meeting on Wednesday. They have already knocked on the board’s door several times on the subject, pleading with it to address the unfair treatment meted out to it in the allocation of assured waters year after year.

Since the water year begins on June 1 and the crop area in the ayacut under the project requires adequate supply, it has been decided to apply to the board for permission to use 50% of the river’s assured waters.

The Krishna water sharing ratio of 34:66 between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh was decided as part of an ad hoc arrangement during the state’s division, and the board has maintained it for the last nine years despite the State authorities’ pleas.

The State will press for water allocation on a 50:50 basis until the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal makes project-wise allocation of water as part of its final award at the 17th meeting of the board, which will have as many as 22 items on the agenda.

The government could complete all pending projects in the Krishna basin after the formation of Telangana State. The State’s requirement for additional supplies under the major irrigation projects had gone up considerably over the years.

At the previous meeting, the State applied pressure to the board on the same issue, but the board unilaterally decided to proceed with the ad hoc arrangement only.

The Board’s annual budget, as well as many technical aspects, implementation of river board gazette, DPRs, and other topics, will be discussed at the meeting.
