The incident, which lasted for approximately 20 minutes, caused chaos and sparked heated arguments, with a video of the altercation quickly going viral on social media.
The incident occurred at the petrol pump on Partapur Road, where a government directive prohibits fuel sales to two-wheeler riders without helmets. When the lineman arrived without a helmet and was denied fuel, he became enraged and, instead of adhering to the rule, cut off the pump’s electricity supply.
Pump employees were forced to rush to the nearby transformer to address the issue, emphasizing that the pump had no outstanding electricity bills. After a heated exchange, the power supply was eventually restored.

The viral video of the incident has drawn widespread criticism and scrutiny of the lineman’s actions and the lack of accountability for such behavior. Arvind Kushwaha, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), stated that no formal complaint had been received regarding the power disruption. However, he assured that necessary action would be taken if a complaint was filed.
Superintending Engineer S.K. Agrawal condemned the lineman’s actions, emphasizing that arbitrarily cutting off power to any establishment is unacceptable. He assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action would be taken against the responsible individual.
This incident highlights the challenges of enforcing government directives and the potential for abuse of authority by officials. It also serves as a reminder of a previous incident where several officials, including a superintending engineer, were suspended for unlawfully cutting off power to an industrial unit.
With the viral video bringing the incident to public attention, there is now increased pressure on authorities to take swift and transparent action to prevent such incidents from recurring. Residents and pump operators alike are awaiting a decisive response to ensure such abuse of power does not happen again.
