Long served water well at Errakunta left abandoned, poses risk to lives

Despite knowing that a long served old water tank is wearing a deserted look after it was left abandoned following construction of a new tank next to it at Errakunta area and even pose a threat to the local people, the officials of Jalpally municipality found neither taking measures to safeguard the tank nor to protect local people from untoward any incident.

An over 20 feet tall circular shaped water fount – that Spreads over an area of 15 to 20 square yards of land near Bara Mulgi area at Errakunta, was constructed somewhere around 30 to 40 years under gram panchayat rule and was served as an only drinking water resource for the dwellers. After quenching the thirst of the local people for several decades, this beautifully built water tank is said to have been gradually left abandoned when bore water trend sets into motion and later tab water comes to serve the dwellers.

Only last year, a new water tank was constructed right next to the old one under Mission Bhagiratha to serve safe drinking water more systematically to the people. With this, the existence of the old but beautiful edifice of the water tank went into complete oblivion.

Raising concern over the state of the dilapidated structure Shaikh Sayeed Bawazeer, a community activist who is pursuing the issue with the municipal authorities said, “there is a great possibility of untoward incident at the water well since it was left abandoned for years and the fount stairs leading to the mouth is left completely open to all and the children of nearby houses may fall prey to the tragedy.”

“I have raised the issue with the concerned authorities of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) and urged them to take appropriate measures to resolve the issue. The municipal authorities can make use of this abandoned water well or else atleast put into play the safety measures around the fount to prevent any untoward incident,” contended Shaikh Sayeed Bawazeer, a community activist who is pursuing the issue with the municipal authorities.

Affirming the same, Mohammed Sajid Ali, Manager Engineering HMWS&SB Jalpally Section said, “Following a plea seeking measures to safeguard water well at Errakunta, we too wrote a letter to the municipal authorities asking them to take a call regarding the fate of the obsolete water well. The old water well has no doubt been left abandoned for years and even discarded from service as it developed leakages. However, it is the authorities of the municipal decide the fate of the fount.”
