Mahalakshmi Scheme Leads to More Women Traveling for Free

The implementation of the Mahalakshmi scheme in Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has significantly impacted women’s travel patterns, as recent data indicates a notable surge in female passengers. According to TGSRTC statistics, approximately 70% of passengers in the city are now traveling freely, with only 30% paying fares to the corporation.

Since its launch on December 9, the Mahalakshmi scheme has emerged as a pivotal initiative, particularly benefiting women by allowing them to travel without incurring any costs. This move has not only facilitated easier commute options for women but has also enabled substantial savings, empowering them to allocate funds towards other essential expenditures.

Initially, the scheme witnessed around 16 lakh passengers daily, which has steadily risen to 20 lakh as its popularity grows. Crucially, out of these 20 lakh daily passengers, an estimated 14 lakh are availing themselves of the benefits under the Mahalakshmi scheme, highlighting its widespread acceptance among women commuters across Hyderabad and beyond.

Sources within TGSRTC management underscored that since the inception of the scheme, approximately 54 crore zero-fare tickets have been issued to women passengers statewide. This figure underscores the scheme’s success in promoting accessibility and affordability in public transport for women, thereby fostering greater mobility and independence.

The Mahalakshmi scheme’s positive impact on women’s travel habits reflects a broader commitment towards inclusive transportation policies in Telangana. As daily passenger numbers continue to rise under the scheme, TGSRTC remains committed to enhancing service delivery and expanding its reach to cater to the evolving needs of commuters in the region.

As Telangana progresses with initiatives like Mahalakshmi, aimed at empowering women through enhanced mobility options, stakeholders anticipate further improvements in public transport accessibility and ridership across the state.
