Man Arrested for Murder of Assam Woman in Bengaluru Hotel

A 21-year-old man from Kannur, Kerala, who was on the run since November 26 for allegedly killing a 19-year-old woman from Assam, was arrested on Friday near the airport in Devanahalli, Bengaluru. The accused, identified as Aarav Hanoy, had fled the city after committing the crime, and his trail led police to Uttar Pradesh before his eventual capture.

According to Bengaluru police, Hanoy was apprehended on his return to the city after traveling to Varanasi. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) D Devaraj confirmed the arrest, stating that Hanoy was caught near Devanahalli after a thorough investigation.

The investigation revealed that Hanoy and the victim, Maya Gogoi Deka, had met six months ago on the dating app Bumble. The two had developed a relationship, frequently communicating and meeting in person. Hanoy, who had initially struggled to find a job in Bengaluru, returned to his hometown but later came back after Gogoi helped him secure an internship at a firm where she had previously worked. However, their relationship soured when Hanoy proposed a live-in relationship, which was rejected by Gogoi.

Police said the murder occurred after an altercation between the two at a hotel room on November 23. Hanoy allegedly procured a knife and a rope after checking into the hotel. Sources suggest that Hanoy, who had a history of jealousy and insecurity, was upset by Gogoi’s sociable nature and their differences in personality. Hanoy, an introvert with few friends, reportedly struggled with personal bonding, which may have triggered the dispute.

The incident occurred on November 24, when Hanoy reportedly attacked Gogoi in the hotel room. He stayed with the body for two days until he left the hotel on the morning of November 26. Hanoy had originally planned to take his own life after committing the murder but ultimately did not follow through, according to police sources.

The hotel staff became suspicious after Hanoy failed to respond to calls on the morning of November 26. When they went to check on the guests, they discovered Gogoi’s lifeless body. Police later determined that her phone had been inactive since November 24, suggesting that she was killed a day after checking into the hotel.

The authorities traced Hanoy through technical analysis, and he was eventually found to have boarded a train to Varanasi, where he had been hiding. After being tracked down, Hanoy was brought back to Bengaluru for further questioning.

Hanoy had not completed his BBA degree and still had five papers to clear. He was reportedly earning a modest Rs 15,000 per month through the internship, which was facilitated by Gogoi, who was employed as a counselor at an education consultancy firm after leaving the company where Hanoy worked.

Police are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the murder, with sources indicating that jealousy and suspicions about the victim’s social life may have played a significant role in the crime. Hanoy is expected to undergo extensive questioning as the investigation progresses.

The case has shocked both the local and national community, raising concerns about the growing prevalence of violence in personal relationships. Authorities are working to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events that led to the tragic incident.
