Man in Hyderabad duped of Rs 40 lakh by woman in matrimony fraud

A man in Hyderabad was duped out of Rs 42 lakh by cyber fraudsters on a matrimonial website where a woman promised to marry him.

The woman approached the victim and convinced him that she was from Europe and that she would be in Hyderabad shortly to marry him. The woman sent a few images and video calls to the victim over WhatsApp and Facebook on a few occasions.

According to the police, the woman told him a few months ago that she needed money and collected Rs 42 lakh on several occasions for herself and investment in some firm

According to cybercrime officials, the victim believed her and transferred the money to several bank accounts. Later, the woman quit talking to the victim, who then realized he had been deceived and approached the police. The police opened an investigation after filing a report.

It’s shocking how common matrimony fraud cases are in the city.

In one case, a city resident was duped out of Rs.17.8 lakh by fraudsters on a famous matrimonial website. The victim, a New Bowenpally resident, had posted his profile on the site looking for a suitable alliance and was approached by an unidentified woman who claimed to be a doctor and had settled in the United Kingdom.

She earned his trust through phone calls and messages by fabricating stories about herself and telling him she would marry him once she returned to India.

She later informed the victim that she was travelling to India and would be carrying some expensive gifts and valuables with her.

He then received calls from people claiming to be airport authorities and Customs officials from the Delhi Airport, saying they had detained the woman who was in illegal possession of over Rs.1 crore in foreign currency. They asked that he transfer Rs.17.9 lakh for income tax and other fees. He sent the money but became suspicious when she did not respond to his calls.
