The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has officially cancelled its academic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yunus Emre Institute, Turkey, with immediate effect, citing Turkey’s support for Pakistan’s terrorist activities amid escalating Indo-Pak tensions.
The university had entered into the five-year agreement with the Turkish cultural institution on January 2, 2024, to promote Turkish language and culture through a diploma programme offered under the School of Languages, Linguistics & Indology. As part of the arrangement, a visiting professor from Turkey had been engaged, who has since returned to his home country.
In a press release, MANUU stated that the decision was taken in solidarity with national sentiments and security interests. This move places the university among a growing number of Indian academic institutions severing ties with Turkish counterparts.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi had earlier terminated its collaboration with Inonu University in Malatya, Turkey, citing national security concerns. Following JNU’s move, Jamia Millia Islamia also announced its decision to suspend academic partnerships with Turkish-affiliated institutions.
The diplomatic fallout follows India’s military response to terrorist attacks, with national institutions increasingly distancing themselves from countries perceived as supportive of hostile actors.
