A massive fire broke out on Sunday at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where millions of devotees had gathered for the grand religious event. The blaze, caused by a cylinder explosion, engulfed 20-25 camps in Sector 19 of the mela premises. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
Visuals from the scene showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the affected area as fire tenders worked swiftly to bring the situation under control. “The fire has been controlled. All people are safe, and no one has been injured. An investigation will be conducted,” stated ADG Bhanu Bhaskar.
Bhaskar Mishra, the In-charge of Akhara Police Station, confirmed that two cylinders exploded, triggering the fire. Immediate relief efforts were carried out under the supervision of senior officials deployed to the site by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The Chief Minister also took cognizance of the incident and directed the administration to ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims.

In a statement, the Maha Kumbh’s official handle on X expressed sorrow over the incident: “Very sad! The fire incident at #MahaKumbh has shocked everyone. The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray Maa Ganga for everyone’s safety.”
The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13 and will continue until February 26, has already witnessed over 77.2 million pilgrims taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam. Despite the fire incident, the spirit of devotion remains undeterred among the devotees.
Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire and to implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
