Medchal and Shamirpet Metro Corridors Making Steady Progress: NVS Reddy

Metro Rail Managing Director NVS Reddy announced significant progress in the preparation of the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the JBS-Medchal (24 km) and JBS-Shamirpet (21 km) Metro corridors. These corridors are key components of the city’s expansion and will improve connectivity between important regions, including Medchal and Shamirpet, as part of the ongoing metro rail development.

Speaking at a press briefing, Reddy revealed that three critical studies are underway to finalize the DPRs: traffic surveys, soil testing (geotechnical investigation), and environmental impact assessments (EIA). These studies are essential to ensure the Metro’s design and construction meet both current and future demands, while minimizing environmental impacts.

According to Reddy, the traffic surveys focus on analysing daily travel patterns, future demand, junction movements, pedestrian footfall, travel time, and the expected number of Metro commuters. These surveys are crucial in understanding the flow of people and vehicles to ensure that the Metro can accommodate the growing population of the city.

The EIA study, he explained, assesses the environmental impact of the project, including air and noise pollution, water resources, biodiversity, and the potential effect on local livelihoods. This ensures that the development does not negatively affect the surrounding environment or communities.

Soil testing, a key part of the geotechnical investigation, is designed to examine soil strength, groundwater levels, and seismic risks. With this information, engineers can design strong and durable Metro pillars and stations. Boreholes are being drilled every 500 meters along the routes, reaching depths of 50 to 100 feet. Reddy mentioned that tests are being conducted at 25 locations along the JBS-Medchal route and 19 locations on the JBS-Shamirpet route. To date, 14 tests on the Medchal route and 11 tests on the Shamirpet route have been completed. The remainder of the tests is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

Following the instructions of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the completion of all studies is expected by March. Once finalized, the DPRs for the JBS-Medchal, JBS-Shamirpet, and Shamshabad Airport-Future City Metro routes will be submitted to the State government for approval. After receiving state approval, the plans will be sent to the Central government for clearance.

NVS Reddy assured the public that every necessary precaution is being taken to ensure a smooth and hassle-free Metro experience once the project is completed. The new corridors are expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve the overall connectivity in the region, with an added benefit for commuters traveling to and from Medchal and Shamirpet.

With the successful development of these new Metro routes, Hyderabad’s public transportation system is poised for substantial growth, making the city’s travel options more efficient and sustainable.
