Microsoft to establish a data center region in Hyderabad

Microsoft announced the opening of its newest data centre region in Hyderabad on Monday, with the goal of assisting clients in India to succeed in a cloud- and AI-enabled digital economy.

The Hyderabad data centre area will be added to India’s existing network of three regions, which include Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai.

It will provide the full Microsoft portfolio — cloud, data solutions, artificial intelligence (AI), productivity tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) — with superior data protection to corporations, start-ups, developers, education, and government organisations.

“A Microsoft data centre area gives our digital economy a competitive advantage and is a long-term investment in our country’s potential,” stated Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Skill Development and IT.

Microsoft established Azure Availability Zones in its Central India data centre location in December 2021 to serve customer needs for high availability and resiliency.

Telangana is developing as a ‘challenger’ in the Indian IT sector, with software exports increasing by 7% year on year to Rs 5 trillion ($67.4 billion) in FY21.

“Microsoft and Telangana have a long history, with Hyderabad having one of the world’s largest Microsoft headquarters, and I am pleased to see the partnership grow,” said Industries Minister and TRS working president K.T. Rama Rao.

Jio, Inmobi, Infosys, TCS, ICICI, Bajaj Finserv, Apollo Hospitals, Mahindra, Dr Reddy’s Labs, Piramal, State Bank of India, Flipkart, Pidilite, and Amity are among Microsoft’s customers in India.

The new data centre will expand Microsoft’s cloud capabilities and ability to assist workers across the country. It will also enable new entrepreneurial opportunities while addressing important security and regulatory requirements, stated Anant Maheshwari, President of Microsoft India.

By 2025, Microsoft hopes to have a 100% renewable energy supply equivalent to the electricity needed by its data centres.
