Despite attempting to acknowledge the rape and murder of a woman in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena led government claimed that Mumbai is the “safest city” in the world. It further told everyone to erase any doubt from their minds regarding the same.
The statements were published in Sena’s editorial newspaper ‘Saamana’. The recent heinous crimes were shocking and a “blot” to Maharashtra’s culture, it read, adding that the anguish in people against the incidents was justifiable.
The party was referring to Friday’s brutal rape of a 34-year-old woman who was assaulted with a rod to the extent that she died of her wounds on early Saturday. The accused was arrested and charged with murder within a few hours of the incident.
“The rape and murder of the woman in Sakinaka has shocked one and all. But, Mumbai is the safest city in the world for women and there should be no doubt about it in anyone’s mind,” the publication mentioned.

The crimes were due to the “horrible pervertedness”- which is witnessed in many places in the world. However, the Sakinada and Hathras case cannot be compared with each other, it said as the culprits’ arrest was delayed as they had the “support of the state’s rulers”. The UP government also went ahead to burn the victim’s body in a haste to destroy all evidence, the Marathi publication wrote.
“The Yogi government said there was no rape in Hathras, which proved to be wrong,” it said, further adding that the Hathras case did not witness the urgent arrival of the National Commission for Women team in Sakinada to investigate.
A specific political party protested to “protect” the accused in J&K’s 2018 Kathua rape case of a minor girl whereas the accused was arrested within 10 mins in the Sakinada case, it claimed.
Shiv Sena said that the only way to prevent such crimes was to stop the perverted mindset as the police cannot be present in all places at all times.
“Now, let’s leave the case to the judiciary. The culprit will definitely be hanged to death as no one has come out in support of the accused, unlike the Hathras and Kathua (cases). One has to know what to politicise,” the daily wrote.
