Mumbai: Major Power Cut due to Grid Failure at TATA Power

Officials told that on Monday a major power cut in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region of Thane, Palghar and Raigad due to grid failure.

Due to TATA’s incoming electric supply failure at around 10:15 a.m. the power supply was interrupted, said BEST one of the distributors.

The breakdown affected the lifelines of Mumbai, Central Railway and Western Railways with all the local trains halted, en route Diva and Vasai.

Many unfortunate commuters at many locations jumped down and started walking to the nearest suburban railway station.

The power outage occurred due to the Central Grid failure of the TATA Power at Kalwa, Thane and the restoration process could take around an hour, A BMC Spokesperson told.

Sumit Thakur, A WR Spokesperson told that “In view of interruption in Traction power at 10.05 hours due to Grid failure of Tata Power company, services between Churchgate and Borivali are suspended. It shall be resumed as soon as the traction power supply is restored,”

Even though the power supply from MSETCL was still available at the Vasai Road, it has been extended to work essential suburban trains between Borivilli to Virar section, he also told.

Efforts were made to start services in the Churchgate-Borivali section. The commuters were requested to maintain social distancing and not to panic.

Other impacts were made due to the power cut like hitting the water supply schedules, lifts getting stuck in buildings, traffic signals leading to chaos on roads in Mumbai.

IS Chahal, Mumbai’s Commissioner requested all the hospitals in the city to contact their respective solid waste management transport garage officers to get enough supplies of diesel for at least eight hours.

A major power supplier in the city, Adani electricity told that it is currently supplying to critical services in Mumbai, the state-run BEST, and including many multiple operators, TATA Power and Adani electricity supply power to the city.

Helpline numbers were shared by Mumbai’s civic body to help those affected.

People took it to social media, within minutes of the power outage. Different Hashtags were used such as #Mumbai, #poweroutage and #powercut started trending on the social media platform Twitter. Even Bollywood Legend Amitabh Bachchan was also among those who took it to social media.

 

Mr Bachchan tweeted, “Entire city in a power outage… somehow managing this message… keep calm all shall be well,” “Dongles working. Vodafone is working for me.”
