Muslim Family Performs Last Rites for Elderly Hindu Woman in Show of Communal Harmony

In a heartwarming act of communal unity, a Muslim family in Mallar village near Kaup, Udupi district, took the responsibility of performing the final rites of a 90-year-old Hindu woman, Janaki Poojari, who passed away on Tuesday. The gesture highlights the strong bond of familial love and respect that transcends religious boundaries.

Janaki Poojari had been living with Rafeeq Abdul Khader, an employee of a private company in Udupi, for the past 10 years, after the death of her husband. Rafeeq’s family welcomed her into their home in the Sunshine Layout of Mallar, where she became an integral part of their household. Despite being estranged from her own family over the years, Janaki maintained a close relationship with Rafeeq’s family, especially after they relocated from Mumbai to Udupi in the 1980s.

Following Janaki’s death, Rafeeq took the initiative to contact her son, Shekhar Vittal, who lives separately in Mumbai. He made arrangements to bring him to Udupi to perform the last rites according to Hindu traditions. Rafeeq shared, “Janaki was with us as a family member since my childhood. Her son had visited a week ago when she was critically ill. After her passing, I informed him and asked him to come for the last rites as per Hindu customs.”

The final rituals were held at the Rudra Bhumi in Kaup on Wednesday, with Janaki’s son and granddaughter present to participate. Rafeeq’s neighbor Ibrahim, Kaup Town Municipality President Harinakshi Devadiga, and several villagers also attended the ceremony, showing their solidarity.

In addition, the family plans to carry out the 13th-day rituals, which will also be performed by Janaki’s son. This act of kindness and respect from Rafeeq’s family exemplifies the essence of communal harmony and the deep human connections that bind people beyond religious affiliations.
