Nagarjuna Sagar Water Dispute: States Agree to Revert, CRPF to Take Over Dam

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have reached an agreement, accepting Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla’s proposal to revert to the November 28, 2023 position regarding the release of Nagarjuna Sagar waters. In a video conference with the Chief Secretaries and DGPs of both states, Bhalla’s proposal aimed to ease tensions arising from Andhra Pradesh taking control of part of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam on November 29 and unilaterally releasing water through the right canal.

Both states have agreed to Bhalla’s suggestion, opting to return to the November 28 status for the release of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam waters. The Telangana government announced that the CRPF will take over the dam.

To address the standoff between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh over the Nagarjuna Sagar project, a meeting chaired by the Union Water Resources Secretary was convened on Saturday. The meeting aimed to defuse tensions over sharing Krishna River waters and discuss the transfer of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and Srisailam Dam, along with their reservoirs and related structures, to the KRMB.

Scheduled for December 2, 2023, at 11 am in hybrid mode in New Delhi, the meeting seeks resolutions to the ongoing water-sharing disputes and related issues. Telangana Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari highlighted that on the night of November 29, around 500 armed Andhra Pradesh policemen arrived at Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, damaging CCTV cameras and releasing about 5,000 cusecs of water by opening head regulators at Gate Numbers 5 and 7.
