In Telangana, a staggering 96% of the elected representatives, specifically 114 out of 119 MLAs, boast considerable wealth, with assets amounting to crores. The data, scrutinized by the National Election Watch and Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), reveals a similar trend across five state elections—Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana—where 88% of the 678 winning candidates are crorepatis.
Telangana leads the pack in terms of individual wealth, with winning candidates averaging Rs 38 crore in assets. Contrasting this, Rajasthan’s MLAs average Rs 7 crore, Madhya Pradesh’s at Rs 11 crore, Mizoram’s at Rs 7 crore, and Chhattisgarh’s at Rs 5 crore.
Interestingly, the Congress party dominates both ends of the wealth spectrum among elected MLAs. Gaddam Vivek, Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy emerge as the top three wealthiest, while Vedma Bhojju (Khanapur), Balu Naik Nenavath (Devarkonda), and Adinarayana Jare (Aswaraopet) stand out as the least affluent.

However, the opulence is not the only notable aspect. Disturbingly, 69% of the winning candidates in Telangana have self-declared criminal cases in their affidavits, with 50% facing serious charges. Shockingly, one MLA even has cases related to murder, and seven have been linked to attempted murder. Additionally, two winning candidates in Telangana face charges related to crimes against women. Among the BRS winners, 19 have declared criminal cases.
This analysis sheds light not only on the economic diversity among elected officials but also on the concerning prevalence of criminal cases within political spheres.
