NEET-UG 2024: 1563 Student’s Grace Marks Cancelled, Centre Tells Supreme Court

In a significant development related to the NEET-UG 2024 controversy, the Centre informed the Supreme Court on Thursday (June 13) about its decision to cancel the grace marks awarded to 1563 students. These candidates will now be informed of their revised scores, excluding the earlier granted grace marks, and will be given the option to either appear for a re-test or retain their scores from the exam conducted on May 5.

Advocate Kanu Agarwal, representing the Union Government, conveyed to a vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that the decision was taken by a panel constituted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 12. The panel aimed to address student concerns, concluding that the award of compensatory marks to these students for loss of time had created a skewed situation. The committee recommended the cancellation of scorecards for the affected students, ensuring they receive their actual marks without the added grace marks.

The Supreme Court bench acknowledged these developments and issued an order stating: “The score-cards of the affected 1563 candidates issued on June 4, 2024 will stand cancelled and withdrawn. These candidates will be informed of their actual scores without compensatory marks. A re-examination will be conducted for them, with results expected before June 30. Candidates opting not to appear for the re-test will have their results declared based on their actual marks from the May 5, 2024 exam.”

Furthermore, Senior Advocate Naresh Kaushik, representing the NTA, informed the court that the re-test will be notified promptly and is likely to be held on June 23. Results from the re-test will be published before June 30 to facilitate counselling scheduled to begin on July 6.

The Court disposed of one petition challenging the grant of grace marks while issuing notice on another petition alleging exam paper leaks, tagging it with similar pending petitions to be heard on July 8.

The petitions before the Court raised concerns about the NEET-UG 2024 results, alleging irregularities and disputing the NTA’s decision to award grace marks to over 1500 candidates based on claims of time loss during the exam.

One of the petitioners, Physics Wallah CEO-Alakh Pandey, argued that the award of grace marks by the NTA was arbitrary, highlighting representations from approximately 20,000 students. Advocate J Sai Deepak represented Pandey in the case, which the Court concluded regarding the issue of grace marks but retained to address other grievances.
