Nizam Era Subedar Collector Bungalow in Warangal Transformed into Heritage Bhavan

The historic Subedar Collector Bungalow, a proud symbol of Warangal’s Nizam-era legacy, is undergoing a remarkable restoration, transforming it into a vibrant Heritage Bhavan. Built in 1886 during the Nizam rule, this grand bungalow is being preserved with a Rs 2 crore investment dedicated to minor repairs that started in February and are now nearing completion.

Spread across an impressive 13 acres, the bungalow features 22 rooms, spacious halls, and a sprawling garden, showcasing architectural brilliance designed to withstand floods and other calamities. Traditional repair techniques, including the use of lime mortar, have been employed to maintain the authenticity and sturdiness of the structure even after 139 years.

Once home to Subedars and later used as the official residence for Warangal’s Collectors, the bungalow stands adjacent to the Warangal Collectorate. Its grand entrance gate, adorned with a large clock and watchmen’s quarters, welcomes visitors to a site of royal heritage. Inside, the rooms are designed for optimal airflow and natural light, with high ceilings of 22 feet decorated with majestic chandeliers, reflecting the grandeur of its era.

The bungalow served as a residence for Subedars until 1948, after which it became the Collector’s official home. Notably, in 1982, archaeological excavations during Collector Jawahar’s tenure uncovered Nizam-era swords and artifacts, which were handed over to the Archaeological Department.

The estate’s garden is being revitalized with various plants, including Temple Tree, Royal Palm, Ukofellam, Lantana, Spider Lily, and Wadelia Rubra, enhancing the heritage ambiance.

With restoration work expected to be completed this week, plans are underway to establish a library, food court, and cultural activities, making the Heritage Bhavan a cultural hub. Soon, the public will be able to visit and appreciate this architectural gem that proudly carries Warangal’s rich historical legacy.
