An iconic platinum necklace studded with approximately 300 diamonds was one of the most prized pieces of jewelry owned by the late Queen Elizabeth II. She received it as a wedding gift from the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1947.
96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, who ascended the throne in February 1952, died on September 8. The Royal Family tweeted: The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.
Over the course of her 70-year rule, she received many jewels. The platinum necklace set made by Cartier, a French luxury brand, is one of the most famous pieces of jewelry.
The Royal Family’s official Instagram account posted two images of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the diamond-studded platinum necklace on July 21, as well as a detailed image of the necklace. In the last image, the Duchess of Cambridge is wearing the same necklace.
The first picture shows Her Majesty wearing a Hartnell satin evening dress with the Order of the Garter’s insignia just days after her accession to the throne in February 1952. Stamps featuring The Queen were based on this iconic image.
The official portrait was also sent to Embassies and Regiments all over the world after her accession.
Princess Elizabeth received the necklace as a wedding present from the Nizam (ruler) of Hyderabad in 1947. Princess Elizabeth was instructed by the Nizam to choose the wedding gift herself, and she chose this platinum necklace set with approximately 300 diamonds.
The late Queen adorned the necklace with many iconic photos throughout her reign, and she loaned it to Kate Middleton in 2014 at the National Portrait Gallery, and in 2019 at a Diplomatic Corps reception.
