No Need to Panic: Experts Assure Public Chicken and Eggs Are Safe Amid Avian Influenza Concerns

Amid rising concerns over cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) reported in some states, doctors and poultry experts have reassured the public that chicken and eggs remain safe for consumption. The Animal Husbandry department has issued precautionary measures in Telangana to safeguard poultry, but experts emphasize there is no need to panic or avoid consuming these products.

Special Chief Secretary Sabyasachi Ghosh addressed the media, clarifying that the recent memo issued by the Animal Husbandry department was a precautionary measure. “People can eat chicken and eggs. This memo is a precautionary step as HPAI has been reported in other states,” he said. The memo urges District Collectors across Telangana to strengthen biosecurity protocols and take measures to prevent the spread of avian influenza.

Key directives from the department include raising awareness among poultry farmers and the public on how to prevent the disease, restricting the transportation of sick birds, ensuring the proper disposal of dead poultry, and encouraging the early reporting of unusual poultry deaths to the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department. Additionally, district-level meetings will be held to discuss and implement containment strategies.

Dr. Madap Karuna, a pediatrician from Kompally, reassured the public, emphasizing that there is no health risk when consuming properly cooked poultry and pasteurized dairy products. “Eating undercooked poultry, beef, or unpasteurized milk can cause illness. However, cooking poultry, eggs, and meat at the recommended internal temperature kills bacteria and viruses, including avian influenza,” said Dr. Karuna.

Poultry experts have also dismissed rumors circulating about possible restrictions on chicken consumption, stressing that these precautions are strictly for the health of the poultry, not for the consumers. There is no reason to avoid chicken or eggs, and the public is encouraged to follow recommended cooking guidelines to ensure safety.

The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents to follow the preventive measures in place while reassuring them that the safety of poultry products is not in question.
